Referencing is a system that allows you to acknowledge the sources of information you have used to complete any piece of work. As a student, it is very important that you identify in your assignments when you are summarising, referring to or quoting from another person’s work, using their ideas, theories or data.

Some of the sources you will need to reference include:

• books or chapters in books
• journals
• newspaper articles
• electronic sources such as web pages or online databases
• conference papers
• films or television programs
• personal communications such as emails, interviews or letters

At Warwickshire College you are required to use the Harvard referencing system. You reference an item by mentioning or citing the author/date in the text of your work and then listing the full details in the alphabetical list of references at the end. By listing your references you show how widely you have read and how much research you have done; it also helps to avoid plagiarism.

Plagiarism is when you present someone else’s work as your own and do not give credit to the original author. It is defined as direct copying, close paraphrasing without acknowledgement and submitting someone else’s work as your own.

The staff at Leamington LRC would like to say a big “Thank You” to all of those who helped us raise money for Children in Need last week. By donating and taking part in our ‘Guess the Number’ competition, you helped us raise £41.50 for the charity.
